Severance has exploded with new construction in this century, but still retains plenty of its heritage, including Bruce's Bar, which is world-famous for its Rocky Mountain Oysters. If you don't know what Rocky Mountain Oysters are, you'll just have to visit Bruce's and give them a try!
Founded in the late 19th century as an agricultural community, the town remained primarily a rural farming community based on the raising of cattle, sugar beets, potatoes, and onions throughout the 1900s. But in the 1990s it began to grow aggressively through the construction of new residential subdivisions. Since the economic base of the town is currently limited (but growing yearly), many of the new residents commute to jobs in Greeley, Fort Collins, Windsor and Denver. Like many communities in western Weld County, the town affords a breathtaking, panoramic view of the Front Range to the west.
Population: 5,611 (2020 estimate). The 2000 census lists 597 people
Climate: 300 days of sunshine per year.
Geography: 6 miles northeast of Windsor and 17 miles east of Ft. Collins.
Median family income: $109,207
Climate: 300 days of sunshine per year
Severance boasts several parks that offer wide variety or amenities, including water features with stocked-fishing ponds, basketball courts, skateboard park, sand volleyball courts and horseshoe pits. New park land dedications are required as subdivisions are approved. There is a golf course with multiple high-quality courses within a 15 minute drive.
The town’s close proximity to larger communities provides limitless recreation options including tennis, golf, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, baseball and bike trails. The Rocky Mountains are less than an hour away, so nature lovers will have no trouble escaping to the wilderness. The Wild and Scenic Poudre River is well-known for its rafting and kayaking. Or grab an inner tube from a tractor and float down the Poudre!
The children of Severance attend the excellent schools in Windsor in the Weld RE-4 Windsor/Severance School District which boasts five elementary schools, two middle schools, including Severance Middle School and two High Schools. Higher education options are ample in Northern Colorado, including the University of Northern Colorado, Aims Community College (both in Greeley) and Colorado State University and Front Range Community College (in Fort Collins).
Banner Health’s Medical Arts Centre of Windsor provides care for the community. It is affiliated with North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley and McKee Medical Center in Loveland. University of Colorado Health and Colorado Health Medical Group have primary care doctors at the Windsor Medical Clinic. University of Colorado Health has hospitals in Fort Collins, Loveland and Children’s’ Hospital in Denver. Quality specialists in virtually all areas are available within a short drive.
